Atikokan, Ojibwe for “caribou bones” is a community located on Highway 11 and is fondly known as the “Canoeing Capital of Canada”. This small town is a starting point for canoe trips in famous Quetico Provincial Park which is located just south.
If you are planning a paddling trip in the park, there are many canoe outfitters that offer packages to suit all needs. A small mouth bass fishing tournament, the Atikokan Bass Classic, takes place in August. Attractions include the walleye fish hatchery, the Centennial Museum, the Native Friendship Center, Pioneer Center or mining attractions and ancient native rock art at the Pictograph Gallery.
